ALBUM COVER ILLUSTRATED REDESIGN

INSTRUCTOR | MATT CURTIUS

SPRING 2024

BACKSTORY

Inspired by her already incredibly crafted cover art, this redesign is a reimagined illustration of the concepts and ideologies that Kali Uchis’s “Red Moon In Venus” revolves around. Using image making and illustrative techniques, the gatefold style full bleed image is a new look at what Kali’s album speaks on.

FLAT ART

PROCESS

Image making was at the forefront of inspiration for the conceptual aspect of this piece. Combining visual elements relating to the music and storytelling of the album was a unique challenge to navigate through. Since the idea of love was the basis of the album, the redesign needed to capture some form of this as well. There was exploration of how to blend the positive and negative visuals of romance in a cohesive way, and multiple ideas were explored for this such as illustrating a rose out of butterflies, whose symbol is transformation..

In the end, the visual synthesis that worked best conceptually and artistically was a jagged yet clean rose made up of cut gems. The result is striking yet leaves you interested and wondering what deeper meaning is hidden in those gems.
